There is a minor element that
requires some attention. Major Halis died in 1933. Around that juncture, there
was no such thing as a last name,
therefore the name 'Ataksor' was later introduced to the offspring of Halis. Yilmaz Ataksor explains the
origins of this last name in the Preface of Halis' book entitled 'Koummoukh Settlement in Amidian
History' (Diyarbakir Tarihinde
Komuk Eli) to wit:
"Some researchers have
questioned as to why Halis did not have a last name upon his death in 1933. In
1933 there was no law.
Therefore, he died with no last name. Despite there being no law regarding last
names, he did like the name Halis
Bey -ATAKSOY- and he wished for his offspring to carry on the name -ATAKSOY-. When the last name laws
were legislated, he had no grandchildren. Thus, as a result, the family carried
on the last name -ATAKSOY-.
The name -HALIS ATAKSOY- is even written on his tombstone."
There is however, another variable in this equation. If Halis wished for the
name 'ATAKSOY' with a 'Y',
then why is the both the
webmaster's last-name 'ATAKSOR' and the website URL 'ATAKSOR'?
Unfortunately, when the laws
were first legislated the Census Bureau of Turkey at the time erred
typographically.
A Census Bureau Agent miswrote
the last name and no attempt by the ATAKSOR family was
made to correct this error.
Presently, the name ATAKSOR is in use and the name ATAKSOY
is a thing of the past - yet,
technically, both are the same name, the same family and the same history.
Today, if Major Halis were
alive, then he would see his grandson's child.
